SUMMARY:Den Chief Training
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, October 12\, 2025\nTime: 10:00am – 1:00pm\nWhere: Treasure Valley Scout Reservation West: West Lodge\nCourse Fee: $15\nWho can register: Units leaders or parents can register their Scout for this training. \nA Den Chief is a Scout\, Venturer or Sea Scout assisting a Cub Scout den. But the story is far more important than those words suggest as the Den Chief: \nServes as a Scouting role model for the Cub Scouts in the den\, as well as the entire pack; Promotes Scouting in general and the local troop in particular; Encourages the transition of Webelos Scouts into Scouts BSA; Holds a leadership position in the troop or crew\, thus fulfilling an advancement requirement in the unit. \nIn addition\, a trained Den Chief: \nAssists the den leader with planning and conducting den meetings; Understands the Cub Scouting program and the differences between Cub Scouts and other Scouting programs; Understands the den leader’s duties and confidently helps lead portions of the den meeting program; Knows a variety of resources for age-appropriate activities for Cub Scouts in the den; Brings a repertoire of activities that Cub Scouts enjoy. \nThis training is designed to build on each of these ideas using a framework that will allow the new Den Chief\, or perhaps the experienced Den Chief looking for new ideas\, to have fun and learn the role. \nAdult leaders need to make sure the role is seen as important and necessary. In agreeing to accept a Den Chief’s assistance\, they ensure the Den Chief has meaningful opportunities to support the den and assist with activities\, to the best of the Den Chief’s ability. In this way\, the den receives the many benefits of having a Den Chief while the Den Chief has opportunities to learn and grow as a leader and Scout. \nCubmasters request Den Chief help from Scoutmasters\, Crew Advisors or Ship Skippers. These adults need to acknowledge the importance of Den Chiefs before the whole troop\, crew or ship and make sure all members understand that the Den Chief holds a leadership position of responsibility. \nDon’t miss out on this great youth training opportunity! \nUpdated 4/28/2025

SUMMARY:2025 Chainsaw Safety Course
DESCRIPTION:Where: Treasure Valley \nCost: 240.00 – Checks can be made out to HNE Council – or you can purchase with a credit card \n8am-4pm – Saturday 10/25 & and Sunday 10/26 \nThe Heart of New England Council will be conducting an In-Council Chainsaw Safety Course at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. This course is designed to help volunteers get trained in the safe use of chainsaws to help clear trails\, remove deadfalls\, clear hazards\, and stockpile firewood around camp. \nThe National Camp Accreditation Program Standards require that any person who operates a chainsaw be approved by the Council designee. Chainsaw operators must be at least 21 years old and meet one of the following requirements: be a professional forester with current credentials and liability insurance; be a certified arborist with credentials; have documentation of training in chainsaw techniques from either (1) state or federally recognized chainsaw training course approved by the council or (2) the BSA Chainsaw Basic Training Course #430-136. \nThis will be a storm damage class for those wishing to operate chainsaws on HNE property. You have to be over 21 YOA. If you have never operated a chainsaw this class is NOT for you. Bill Girard of Game of Logging will be the instructor; we are doing this in cooperation with the Midstate Trail Association. Seating is limited. If we have more people interested than there are seats\, we will schedule another class. \nBSA chainsaw training is a 12-hour course which will cover both classroom saw safety operations and a field cutting day. \nFor more information on this course\, please contact Ranger Matt McLaughlin at matt.mclaughlin@scouting.org.

Our program staff is trained in program facilitation and course operation by the Scouting America’s National Camping School. \nThis is a day that will challenge each scout individually and as a group. Work together to develop trust as a unit and learn some skills for creative problem solving\, decision making and teamwork. Your unit will leave as a higher functioning\, more confident version of those who came in. \nThe minimum age for participation in high course activities is 13 years of age at the time of participation. SUMMARY:HNE 2026 Outdoor Hiking Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Calling all outdoor enthusiasts! \nJoin Heart of New England Council for a series of hiking challenges in 2026\, designed to get you active outside all year long! \nEach season you can participate in a 3-month long challenge and earn a patch! The combined patches can join together to create the complete design shown here. \nWinter (January – March): 25 miles – – limited availability remaining \nSpring (April – June): 50 miles \nSummer (July – September): 50 miles \nAutumn (October – December): 25 miles \nAny miles spent outside in activities of your choosing will count – hiking\, biking\, canoeing\, snowshoeing\, etc. Please see the FAQ for more information. \nIndividual challenges cost $12 and participants who register for 3 challenges (Winter\, Spring\, and Summer) may use the $5 discount code* for the Autumn challenge. Patches will be mailed at the conclusion of each challenge period.\n*This code OUTDOORCHALLENGE2026 is only to be applied to Autumn ticket\, if the other three tickets have been purchased. \nHNE 2026 Outdoor Challenge FAQ’s \nDo I have to be involved with scouting to participate?  No! This challenge is open to everyone- scouts\, their families\, as well as the larger community. \nWhat miles count?  While we would encourage you to get out into nature and participate on a trail\, river\, bike path\, etc. we recognize that this might not be possible for all participants. However\, we hope that you will go above and beyond your regular routines. If you normally walk your dog around your neighborhood\, perhaps you can instead walk them on a local trail? If you are normally biking to work each day\, we suggest that you only count recreational bike miles. Canoeing\, kayaking\, or another self-propelled watercraft are fine as well! Essentially\, this is your challenge\, and you can do what works for you! \nDo I need to participate in all 4 challenges?  No! Each season there will be a new challenge with a unique reward patch. If you complete all 4 challenges\, you will earn the combined patches shown above. \nHow many miles do I need to complete?  Depending on which challenge you are completing\, there are different mileage requirements: \n· Winter (January – March) – 25 miles \n· Spring (April – June) – 50 miles \n· Summer (July – September) – 50 miles \n· Autumn (October – December) – 25 miles \nHow do I track my miles?  You are free to use whatever method you wish- spreadsheet\, tracking app\, etc. A tracker is provided for your convenience if you wish to use it. \nDo I need to submit my miles?  We would love to hear how and where you have been participating\, but following the Scout Law\, a scout is trustworthy\, and we will hold you to your word that you have completed this challenge. You can reach out to chris.breecher@hnescouting.org to submit your miles. \nWhen will I receive my patch(es)?   Each patch segment will be mailed at the conclusion of each challenge period. \nWhat to wear?  While not required\, scouts are encouraged to wear scout activity shirts (Class B) to help spread awareness of scouting. \nPictures?  We’d love to see where you are completing this challenge. Please send pictures to chris.breecher@hnescouting.org. Submitted pictures may be used on social media to help advertise this event. Also feel free to share to your own social media using #HNE2026OutdoorChallenge. \nAny other questions\, please reach out to chris.breecher@hnescouting.org. \nUpdated 12/8/2025
