SUMMARY:ILST Training 2026
DESCRIPTION:Introduction To Leadership Skills for Troops \nTraining Scouts to be leaders is an ongoing process that begins immediately when a Scout\naccepts a leadership position in his troop. It is the Scoutmaster’s responsibility to make sure the\nScout has all the necessary tools and to coach and mentor the Scout to be successful. \nThe purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) course is to teach Scouts\nwith leadership positions about their new roles and the organizational and leadership skills needed\nto most effectively reach success in that role. Completion of ILST is a prerequisite for Scouts\nto participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)\nand the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is also required to participate\nin a Kodiak Challenge Trek. \nWhen – March 14\, 2026 8:30am – 5:00pm \nWhere – Shirley Rod and Gun Club \n**Pizza and drinks will be provided for lunch \nRegistration Open Date – 12/1/2025 – Registration Close Date 2/25/2026 \nLimited amount of tickets available \nCost: $10 \n

SUMMARY:2025 Chainsaw Safety Course
DESCRIPTION:Where: Treasure Valley \nCost: 240.00 – Checks can be made out to HNE Council – or you can purchase with a credit card \n8am-4pm – Saturday 10/25 & and Sunday 10/26 \nThe Heart of New England Council will be conducting an In-Council Chainsaw Safety Course at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. This course is designed to help volunteers get trained in the safe use of chainsaws to help clear trails\, remove deadfalls\, clear hazards\, and stockpile firewood around camp. \nThe National Camp Accreditation Program Standards require that any person who operates a chainsaw be approved by the Council designee. Chainsaw operators must be at least 21 years old and meet one of the following requirements: be a professional forester with current credentials and liability insurance; be a certified arborist with credentials; have documentation of training in chainsaw techniques from either (1) state or federally recognized chainsaw training course approved by the council or (2) the BSA Chainsaw Basic Training Course #430-136. \nThis will be a storm damage class for those wishing to operate chainsaws on HNE property. You have to be over 21 YOA. If you have never operated a chainsaw this class is NOT for you. Bill Girard of Game of Logging will be the instructor; we are doing this in cooperation with the Midstate Trail Association. Seating is limited. If we have more people interested than there are seats\, we will schedule another class. \nBSA chainsaw training is a 12-hour course which will cover both classroom saw safety operations and a field cutting day. \nFor more information on this course\, please contact Ranger Matt McLaughlin at matt.mclaughlin@scouting.org.

SUMMARY:Den Chief Training
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, October 12\, 2025\nTime: 10:00am – 1:00pm\nWhere: Treasure Valley Scout Reservation West: West Lodge\nCourse Fee: $15\nWho can register: Units leaders or parents can register their Scout for this training. \nA Den Chief is a Scout\, Venturer or Sea Scout assisting a Cub Scout den. But the story is far more important than those words suggest as the Den Chief: \nServes as a Scouting role model for the Cub Scouts in the den\, as well as the entire pack; Promotes Scouting in general and the local troop in particular; Encourages the transition of Webelos Scouts into Scouts BSA; Holds a leadership position in the troop or crew\, thus fulfilling an advancement requirement in the unit. \nIn addition\, a trained Den Chief: \nAssists the den leader with planning and conducting den meetings; Understands the Cub Scouting program and the differences between Cub Scouts and other Scouting programs; Understands the den leader’s duties and confidently helps lead portions of the den meeting program; Knows a variety of resources for age-appropriate activities for Cub Scouts in the den; Brings a repertoire of activities that Cub Scouts enjoy. \nThis training is designed to build on each of these ideas using a framework that will allow the new Den Chief\, or perhaps the experienced Den Chief looking for new ideas\, to have fun and learn the role. \nAdult leaders need to make sure the role is seen as important and necessary. In agreeing to accept a Den Chief’s assistance\, they ensure the Den Chief has meaningful opportunities to support the den and assist with activities\, to the best of the Den Chief’s ability. In this way\, the den receives the many benefits of having a Den Chief while the Den Chief has opportunities to learn and grow as a leader and Scout. \nCubmasters request Den Chief help from Scoutmasters\, Crew Advisors or Ship Skippers. These adults need to acknowledge the importance of Den Chiefs before the whole troop\, crew or ship and make sure all members understand that the Den Chief holds a leadership position of responsibility. \nDon’t miss out on this great youth training opportunity! \nUpdated 4/28/2025
