Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is a fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you become familiar with basic camp skills required for Scout to First Class.
IOLS builds and expands on concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and Varsity Coach Position-Specific Training. It provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. This hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills needed to lead Scouts in the outdoors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in an effective and engaging Scouting program.
Instructors will help you learn how to set up camp, cook, work with woods tools, and about ropes. Also learn to plan and lead campfire programs, map reading and compass skills, hiking and packing techniques, nature identification, and outdoor ethics. Each outdoor session will bring to life the pages of the Scouts BSA Handbook to help you deliver the promise of Scouting to yourself and the youth you
serve. It will increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader.
This course includes a required overnight camping trip with participants sleeping in tents. Three meals are provided as part of the course. Detailed info will be emailed to enrollees after registration. Your participation in all in-person lessons is required to receive credit as trained.
